TARRYTOWN, N.Y. An off-duty Tarrytown police officer and a trio of off-duty New York Police Department officers restrained a would-be jumper at the Tappan Zee Bridge Friday afternoon, according to New York State Police in Tarrytown.
Tarrytown police Sgt. John Gardner was on his way home from work when he spotted the Yonkers woman, who was threatening to jump from the bridge into the Hudson River just before 2:30 p.m, according to police. Gardner and the NYPD officers, who happened upon the scene, got out of their cars and stopped the woman from jumping, police said.
The woman, who was taken to the Westchester Medical Center unharmed, was standing midway across the bridge near the Westchester County-bound traffic lanes.
This is the second time in two months that police have thwarted someone trying to jump off the Tappan Zee Bridge. In May, police talked a 55-year-old New Rochelle man out of jumping.
In April, Dominic Dimele, a 21-year old Mount Vernon man, jumped from the bridge to his death.
