Police responded to a report at 10:40 p.m. Monday that a pedestrian had been struck by a motor vehicle on Saw Mill River Road at the intersection of Payne Street. The responding officers came upon a man lying in the roadway in the left lane, southbound, on Route 9A, police said.

Greenburgh Police said the man was unconscious and sustained trauma injuries. He was treated at the scene by Greenburgh Police EMS and transported to the Westchester Medical Center.

The unidentified male succumbed to his injuries during the night. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Greenburgh Police Officers temporarily closed the roadway to traffic in both directions as detectives conducted an accident investigation. The preliminary investigation revealed that the man was walking across Saw Mill River Road from the east and was struck by a 2006 Toyota Scion, operated by a 27-year-old female, as he attempted to cross the roadway. The report said the victim landed in the left lane of the southbound roadway and was struck by a second vehicle, a 2007 Honda Civic, operated by a 28-year-old female. The Toyota Scion was occupied by two people, and the Honda Civic had one occupant. There were no reported injuries to any of the occupants. The driver of the Toyota Scion, identified as Chante Ann Smith of 43 North Bleeker St., Mount Vernon, was subsequently arrested on an outstanding warrant for driving with a suspended license and suspended registration, non-payment of fine. The bench warrant was issued by the Town of Greenburgh Court. Smith was scheduled to appear in Town Court Tuesday. Greenburgh Police said the incident is still under investigation by the Detective Division, pending autopsy results from the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s Office.
