Officials confirmed that Mount Vernon police attempted to stop a black truck at approximately 9 a.m. on Tuesday for a traffic violation, when the driver sped off, nearly striking responding officers.
According to multiple reports, the driver took police on a chase into the Bronx, before losing control of the vehicle, hopping the sidewalk and striking several cars before coming to a crashing halt at a gas station on East 234th Street near Bronx Boulevard.
The driver was taken out of the vehicle and arrested, while a female passenger was shot in the shoulder attempting to get out of the Chevy, police said. She is reportedly in stable condition at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. The cause of the shooting has not been released.
"The driver initially attempted to evade officers, driving northbound," acting Mount Vernon Deputy Police Chief Roy Hastings said in a statement. "The driver then changed direction and intentionally rammed a Mount Vernon Police Department vehicle, leading to Mount Vernon officers discharging their weapons."
A suspect is currently being held in the Bronx, but is expected to be transported to Mount Vernon, where local detectives are handling the investigation. Hastings noted that an officer sustained minor injuries in the struggle and was treated at the scene.
