Police Report Four Killed In One-Car Crash On Sprain Parkway

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — The quiet Labor Day weekend was shattered early Sunday when four people were killed after a car left the Sprain Parkway near Underhill Road in Greenburgh, drove along a grassy shoulder and then struck a bridge abutment at the overpass, state police said.

The condition of the rented Volkswagen Golf, which caught fire after it crashed, made it difficult for police to determine the number of passengers in the car. The car was traveling north just north of Jackson Avenue.

The State Police said the accident occurred at about 5:45 a.m. but had not determined what caused the car to leave the parkway or whether excessive speed or driver impairment were causes.

Police said the Sprain Brook Parkway northbound will have lane closures until further notice for reconstruction of the accident scene.

According to the police report, the car was driving outside of the guard rail for about 100 yards before striking the bridge.

The Fairview and Greenville fire departments were at the scene.

The State Police ask anyone who may have witnessed this crash to contact investigators at Hawthorne at 914-769-2600 .
