IRVINGTON, N.Y. - Traffic was backed up from Irvington to at least Hastings on the northbound side of the Saw Mill River Parkway Tuesday afternoon as police and firefighters responded to two separate accidents.

A car fire was reported aroud 1:30 p.m. on the northbound lane just south of the I-87/I-287 exit, county police said. The car was “totally engulfed in flames” when firefighters arrived, county police said, but no injuries were reported.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze shortly afterward. County police said the northbound road had been closed between 1:30 and 2:40 p.m. while the car fire was put out. Traffic also snarled on the southbound lanes as emergency responders worked the scene.

A separate accident involving several cars was reported further south on the northbound lanes after the car fire was put out, but county police could not provide more information at this time.
