Beginning on Saturday, Nov. 1, members of the department will begin installing small red markers that rise approximately three feet above the hydrant, ensuring that no matter the weather conditions, firefighters can locate a water source in the event of an emergency.
According to Fire Chief Thomas Cain, nearly 1,000 hydrants will be tagged in total.
The markers will be removed by members of the Water Department in the spring, once the threat of snow subsides. Cain noted that homeowners can help the cause by keeping the area surrounding a hydrant on their property clear.
“Fire hydrants serve an extremely critical role in the rapid and successful extinguishment of fire, and when accumulated, drifting or plowed snow often results in difficulty locating hydrants, especially at night and during inclement weather,” he added. “Precious time can be lost searching for a hydrant buried by snow.”
