“New York City and its surrounding suburbs have interdependent economies and similar costs of living,” Abinanti said in a statement. “Our workers travel regionally and should benefit from the same minimum wage.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo's proposed budget includes a two-tier minimum wage where New York City workers earn higher wages than the rest of the state.

Abinanti suggests expansion of the plan to as far as Westchester County's northern border.

“Westchester’s cost of living is almost equivalent to New York City’s, higher than Long Island’s and far higher than the rest of the state and the rest of the country. Westchester workers who put in an honest day’s work should be paid enough to keep their families out of poverty.”
