It's actually quite uncommon for Hartsdale district commissioners to even have opponents — last year marked the first contested election in more than a decade. One of five commissioners is elected every five years in each of Greenburgh's three fire districts Hartsdale, Fairview and Greenville, putting one member in each district up for reelection each year.
Overing's reinstatement will have put him on the board for about 18 years. Overing said he's excited to continue his service to Hartsdale.
"I love the fire service, there's no doubt about that. I guess you can call it a calling you just cant give it up," said Overing, who has lived in Hartsdale for 45 years. "Just the way it operates — our mission is to help people."
The annual elections for all Greenburgh fire district boards will take place on Dec. 11. For Hartsdale elections, residents can vote at the Hartsdale Fire Station No. 1, 25 S. Central Ave., Hartsdale from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
One main role of the commissioners is establishing the yearly budget and implementing the tax levy. This year, Overing joined Chairman Robert Broderick and Commissioner Frances Stanley in a 3-2 vote in favor of a $10.4-million budget proposal for 2013. The budget will up the tax levy by 4.3 percent.
One of the Hartsdale Fire District's challenges in 2013 will be paying off more than $1 million in property-tax reductions, said Hartsdale Fire District Treasurer Sharon Spagnoli in October. A majority of the appropriation increases from the 2012 budget will go toward state retirement costs, according to the Hartsdale budget proposal.
