New York State election law requires candidates to collect signatures from at least 1,000 registered Democrats and file them with the Board of Elections in White Plains.
Listed on the Greenburgh petitions were incumbent Town Council members Diana Juettner and Francis Sheehan. and Anne Povella (Receiver of Taxes). Challengers included Sherron Fantauzzi for Town Clerk and and Bernstein for Supervisor.
Bernstein is opposing incumbent Town Supervisor Paul Feiner. According to a press release by Bernstein's office, the Democrat Party submitted a total of 1,529 signatures in support of its endorsed candidates.
Feiner reported Tuesday that he filed 4,000 petitions with the Elections Board Monday and that the Working Families party that it would be filing on his behalf.
If more than one person files the required number of signatures for office, a primary election will be held to decide the nominee. The town-wide primary is scheduled Sept. 10.
Suzanne Berger, the chair of the Greenburgh Democratic Committee, said signatures were gathered from “every corner of the town.”
Bernstein, who will carry the Democratic Party Committee endorsement into the primary against Feiner, said his petition process had "grass roots support and momentum our campaign is building.”
“I am immensely grateful to the district leaders who carried petitions this year,” Bernstein said. “And thanks aren’t nearly enough to say to the many volunteers who contacted me after I won the party’s endorsement and then carried my petitions in parts of town where there are no current district leaders or when some of the leaders were ill or otherwise unable to carry.
Feiner, a Democrat who ran unopposed in 2011 with the Democrat, Working Families and Independence party endorsements, will be seeking his 12th two-year term as Supervisor.
