Greenburgh Event A Chance To 'Meet The Candidates'

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Just weeks before Election Day, Greenburgh voters will have a chance Wednesday to ask questions and raise concerns to local candidates.

The Lower Hudson Group of the Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter partnered with the Greenburgh Nature Center to host "Meet the Candidates," an annual event that invites local candidates to speak to their community about their positions on environmental issues.

Ed Berry, Sierra Club's Lower Hudson Group political director, said the committee that invites the candidates to the event always makes sure candidates from both major parties are available, because environmental issues are not partisan decisions. So far, however, only one Republican candidate has committed to attending, he said.

"As we live in an increasingly crowded world, I think that it behooves us to pay much more attention to the environment," Berry said. "We should always be talking about energy conservation."

The event will begin with light refreshments at 7 p.m. at the Greenburgh Nature Center, where the floor will be open for citizens to talk to candidates individually. Then, at 7:30, each candidate will speak and take questions from the audience.

The topics will center around environmental issues, and Berry asked that those who attend keep questions on topic.

"We just want to know the environmental concerns that these people see over the immediate future," he said. "We concentrate on the state assembly and state senate because there are a lot of key issues in New York state that are particular to New York state."

Candidates in the running for New York State Senate positions who have committed to attending include New York State Assembly member George Latimer (D) who is running in the 37th District and Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D) who is running to represent the 35th District.

Candidates running for New York State Assembly positions will include:

  • Robert Castelli (R ), running for re-election, now in the 93rd Assembly District
  • Thomas Abinanti (D), running for re-election in the 92nd District
  • Sandy Galef (D), running for re-election, now in the 95th District
  • Shelley Mayer (D), running for re-election, now in the 90th District
  • Amy Paulin (D), running for re-election in the 88th District
  • Former Rye Mayor Steve Otis (D), running for election in the 91st District
