Legislator MaryJane Shimsky, Yonkers Councilman Michael Sabatino, Board of Legislator Chairman Ken Jenkins, Yonkers Council President Chuck Lesnick and Legislator Bill Ryan stood at the vacant facility and called on County Executive Rob Astorino to take action to get the work done.
More than $1 million, previously approved by the Board of Legislators, has been spent on design and construction costs to renovate the county pool. The Sprain Ridge Park pool has been closed for the last two summers.
The Astorino administration has delayed several projects due to budget cuts and state and federal funding delays. George Oros, Astorino’s chief of staff, told the Journal News in January that funding, construction coordination and state or federal funding are factors in delays on projects such as Sprain pool.
In 2011, the Board of Legislators unanimously added $8.8 million to the 2011 Capital Budget to begin reconstruction of the Sprain Ridge Pool facility, which serves residents from the town of Greenburgh, Yonkers, Hastings and surrounding communities.
“Westchester residents pride themselves on having great parks and recreational facilities for their use, and here, in one of the county’s major population areas, we have a project ready to go, the design entirely completed," said Shimsky (D-Hastings-on-Hudson). “The project should be a high priority."
The pool renovation project will involve reconstructing the pool complex into a series of smaller pools, slides and play features that are popular in recreational facilities. Work will include pool mechanics, piping, structure, coping, decking, landscaping and the concession area, plus site work. New fences will be added to establish the pool area as well.
“The pool renovation project will make countless residents and families happy on hot summer days in years to come, but it will also create much needed construction sector jobs in the meantime,” said Ryan (D-White Plains). “You would think that a project like this would get the green light all the way through.”
