Unofficial Results Rolling In From Westchester County, Local Primaries

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - Westchester County voters came out in droves on Tuesday to cast their vote in several local and state primaries.

Registered Republicans and Democrats had their voices heard as they voted on candidates in two Senate districts and an Assembly district to move on to the general election in November.

In the 36th Senate district, which encompasses Mount Vernon, with 58 of 66 (87 percent) of districts reporting, Bronx Democrat Jamaal T. Bailey unofficially garnered 1,329 votes, while candidate Edward Mulraine trailed with 1,056 votes. The winner will fill the seat vacated by former Sen. Ruth Hassell-Thompson who has moved on to work in Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration.

Locally, with 65 of 74 (87 percent) of district’s reporting out of Mount Vernon, Just Nichelle Johnson will retain the seat that was previously appointed to her by Mayor Richard Thomas, after receiving more than 70 percent of nearly 3,500 votes over challenger Tamika Coverdale. In Mamaroneck, Board of Trustee candidates Keith Waitt, Victor Tafur and Leon Potok will represent the Democrats, with each claiming more than a quarter of votes, while hopeful Stuart Tiekert fell just short.
