Preparation for the major snowstorm is well underway.
Joe Tarricone, a manager of the Wallauer's hardware store in Carmel's Putnam Plaza, reports that merchandise “sold through right away," noting snow shovels and rock salt as examples.
All but a handful of shovels were sold, Tarricone said, and nearly all of the store's snow blowers, too. Tarricone also noted some people bought painting supplies because they were looking to paint while they were at home during the storm.
Tom Kirkwood, who also works at the Wallauer's in Carmel, said people were looking for shovels, rock salt, batteries and gas cans.
“A lot of people think that the power might go out,” Kirkwood said, noting demand for propane grills, C batteries and D batteries.
Wallauer's chose to close early at 3 p.m. and for all of Tuesday.
At a nearby Hannaford grocery store, inventory was running low on shelves for some categories, including milk, bread, meat and soup. Inventory for various other products dropped but not to the point where shelves were bare.
A representative for the Carmel Hannaford declined to comment, citing a company policy.
School districts in Putnam County have responded by curtailing schedules. Carmel's school district announced a closure for Monday while Mahopac's announced a shortened school day. Putnam Valley's school district announced a closure, while Haldane is doing so for Tuesday.
Brewster's district did not post an announcement on its website while Garrison's announced an abbreviated Monday school day. All school district notices were current as of early Monday evening.
Several local governments have curtailed their operations. Town Halls in Carmel, Kent, Patterson and Southeast are scheduled to be closed on Tuesday. A Southeast Planning Board meeting, a Putnam Valley Planning Board meeting and a Cold Spring Board of Trustees meeting also are canceled.
