Guest Steven Brill used the example of a Stamford woman's trip to Stamford Hospital for what she thought was a heart attack to explain the national predicament of out-of-control health-care costs.
The woman's ailment turned out to be indigestion and not a heart attack, but her hospital trip ended up costing her thousands of dollars anyway.
Brill's 60,000-word cover story in Time magazine, "Bitter Pill: Why Medical Bills Are Killing Us," used the lens of several medical centers around the country, including Stamford Hospital, to explain why they charge sometimes absurd amounts of money for small things — a box of sterile gauze pads for $77, or $18 for one, single diabetic test strip.
The Time magazine story is available to subscribers only, but an interview with Brill about how he researched the story is available to the public.
