Mount Pleasant Awaits Safety Reports Before Closing Rail Crossings

MOUNT PLEASANT, N. Y. -- Nearly a year after a deadly Metro-North train crash at Commerce Street in Mount Pleasant, town officials say they would consider closing any of the four grade crossings in town if federal and local engineers recommended it, reports The Examiner.

Final reports are expected soon from the National Transportation Safety Board and Mount Pleasant's town engineer regarding the safety of the four grade crossings. When the issue came up at a Jan. 5 meeting, Supervisor Carl Fulgenzi said he would support those safety recommendations, according to The Examiner.

Fulgenzi said any proposal to close a grade crossing would have to go through a lengthy public hearing and petitioning process with the state and the Metropolitan Transit Authority, The Examiner says. In February 2015, a train crashed with an SUV, killing the driver and five people on the train.
