Officer Matthew Savitsky broke off the Nov. 13 chase on Knickerbocker Road out of concern for civilians — including children on their way to school just after 7 a.m. that Wednesday morning, Police Capt. John Trainor told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Heith L. Turner, 46, “refused to stop” his 1996 Honda, Trainor said.
This led to summonses for speeding, tailgating and reckless driving, as well as for driving without a license, registration or insurance and having unclear plates, the captain said.
After identifying Turner, Tenafly police went to his family’s house, assisted by their Norwood colleagues.
Although they found fresh motorcycle tracks in the snow outside, Trainor said, Turner’s mother said he didn’t live there and she “hadn’t seen him,” he said.
They left messages — and the summonses — but never heard back, the captain added.
A grand jury last week returned charges against Turner for criminal eluding “in a manner that created a risk of death or injury.”
A judge signed a warrant for his arrest.
