Kuruvila, who was the class valedictorian and Alexander, the class salutatorian, lifelong friends since kindergarten, are both first-generation Americans, with parents who emigrated from India. They've both been to India several times and are grateful for the unique worldview that such experiences have provided them.

Kuruvila, who has been in the Elmsford Schools since pre-kindergarten, has participated in the chess club, the Science Olympiad and was a member of the National Honor Society, to name a few activities. Math was one of Shawn's favorite subjects and it was the one that came easiest to him.

"If I couldn't figure something out, I'd just try harder and harder," Kuruvila said. He will be majoring in actuarial science at SUNY Binghamton.

Alexander, who spent his early years in Brooklyn, came to the Elmsford Schools in kindergarten. He's played junior varsity basketball and was on the track team for three years. He has also participated in the Peers is Leaders club, was a member of the student government and served as a volunteer in the Backyard Sports program. Like Kuruvila, he also participated in Science Olympiad and was a member of the NHS.

In the fall, he will be attending the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College to study finance and investments. Both of them said they were sad to leave AHHS, but are excited about their future.

"This is a small school, but it's been a big family to both of us," said Alexander.
