Edgemont Again Named One of Nation's Best Schools

EDGEMONT, N.Y. – Edgemont High School has once again found itself among the nation’s elite.

Edgemont was ranked as the 142nd best public high school in the country in a list of the top 1,000 schools released by Newsweek earlier this week.  The announcement comes less than a month after U.S. News & World Report named Edgemont the 96th best high school in the country.

“We are very lucky we have such bright students and very dedicated teachers and parents who support our schools,” Superintendent Nancy Taddiken said.

According to its website, Newsweek ranked the schools in the order that they “have proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready grads.”

The list was based on six components provided by school administrators - graduation rates - 25 percent, college matriculation rate - 25 percent, AP/IB/AICE tests taken per student -25 percent, average SAT/ACT scores - 10 percent, average AP/IB/AICE scores - 10 percent, and AP courses offered  per student- 5 percent.

Taddiken said that, while the recognition was nice, it offered just a snapshot of what the district and its students are doing.

“There are lots of ways to look at the success of a school district,” she said. “It’s very nice we have made that particular cut but it doesn’t mean that we don’t keep working hard to make sure we are meeting the needs of all of our students.”

Overall, 14 Westchester County schools cracked the top 1,000, led by Bronxville High School, which came in at 40th overall and was named the second best high school in the state.
