Edgemont Class Of 2012 Scores Top Marks On SAT

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Edgemont High School's average SAT scores for the class of 2012 were the highest they've been in at least six years, according to the chair of Edgemont's guidance department.

The class of 2012 broke the 1,900 mark this year, with a combined average score of 1,909. Last year, the class average of 1,887 was good enough for a No. 3 spot countywide, according to Westchester Magazine .

Almost 99 percent of Edgemont's graduates went on to four-year colleges last year. Edgemont guidance department Chair Kevin Fleck said he hasn't seen any major changes in the types of colleges students choose to attend.

"Our students do well in the college process every year," Fleck said. "We really try to focus on letting students find what's best for them."

Of the 142 students who went on to four-year colleges in 2011, almost half went to a State University of New York school. Edgemont's top out-of-state school choices were the University of Michigan, attended by 20 students in the class of 2011; Tulane University, with 19 students; and Pennsylvania State University, which took on 14 Edgemont students.

Edgemont High School Principal Devan Ganeshananthan said SAT preparation is not a focus at Edgemont; instead, the high scores go hand-in-hand with giving students a well-rounded education and sticking to the New York state curriculum.

"We don't have to push our students to do anything. They're very driven in developing themselves," Ganeshananthan said.

Since 2007, Edgemont has always placed well above the national average in SAT scores. Scores have fluctuated over the years, but have not dropped below 1,809 since before 2007, according to school data .
