EDGEMONT, N.Y. If Edgemont School District Director of Facilities John McCabe gets his way, Seely Elementary School will get all new windows and exterior doors next summer and Greenville Elementary will get a new underground oil storage tank.
The price tags -- $1.1 million for Seely, and $110,000 for Greenville.
It's all part of the district's ongoing, five-year capital facilities plan, and there's nothing new about it. McCabe updated the plan Tuesday night for the Board of Education, as required by law every year. The items he mentioned were already in the plan, but he wants to put them on the schedule this year.
"The capital plan is a living document," he told the board. "Things change. Conditions change..." Safety has to come first, he said, and priorities are always shifting.
Seely's windows and exit doors are more than 20 years old, he said, and need to be replaced. The $1.1 million price tag includes government-mandated testing and inspections that ensure the safety of the children attending the school.
The 10,000-gallon underground oil storage tank at Greenville was installed in 1989, McCabe said, and needs to be replaced before it becomes compromised and causes an environmental problem. He said the tank will be replaced with an 8,000-gallon tank that will meet the school's needs.
Superintendent Nancy Taddiken said the board could approve the plan at its Jan. 24 meeting, or put it off until Feb. 14.
"When you approve the plan," she told the board, "you are approving the concept, not the expenditures."
All spending will have to be approved as part of the 2012-2013 school budget that will go before Edgemont School District voters on May 15.
The plan will be available for public scrutiny on the Edgemont BOE website beginning Wednesday.
