Edgemont School Board to Hear of Math Progress

EDGEMONT, N.Y. – A presentation on the Edgemont School District's new math curriculum for kindergarten through fifth grade will be one of the highlights of Tuesday night's Board of Education meeting, scheduled for 8 p.m. at Edgemont High School.

Teachers Jennifer Allen, Edward Kennedy, Linda Fleisher, Isadora Kornspun, Patricia Kuschman and Deborah Mumford will update the board on the implementation progress of Math in Focus, which began in September.

"This program is more old-fashioned and quantitative," School Board Chair Gerry Stoughton said Sunday. Stoughton said the previous curriculum was not giving the pupils a strong enough grounding in the basics of math to succeed at the high school level. The sixth-grade program was changed last year.

Also on the agenda are several personnel moves, including the appointment of Doron Markus as secondary assistant principal at Edgemont Junior-Senior High School.

Stoughton said he expects questions from the public about the 2012-2013 school budget, but the district is still waiting for key information from the state to understand what the target will be to comply with the new 2 percent tax levy cap. Stoughton said the board will share what information it has, and that a public budget study session will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, in the large group instruction room at the junior-senior high school.
