Edgemont Seeks Greenburgh's Input For New Leader

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Edgemont School District board members are asking parents, students and other members of the school district for Greenburgh's input during their search for a new superintendent.

With Edgemont School District Superintendent Nancy Taddiken retiring at the end of the 2013 academic year, the board has appointed a subcommittee to work with School Leadership, LLC, to replace Taddiken, who has served on the position for 22 years. At the Edgemont School Board of Education meeting Tuesday night, Michaeline Curtis, board member and chairperson of the sub-committee, said they plan to take the surveys very seriously during their considerations.

"We're going to weigh their input very heavily. I'm very interested to see what they bring back," Curtis said.

The survey can be answered by parents, students, staff members and any Greenburgh resident living in the district, and asks takers to identify the skills and experience they'd like to see in a new superintendent.  Deadline for submissions is set at Oct. 15 and Curtis said the subcommittee will send its reports to the board on Oct. 23.

The appointment of Michael Curtin in his new role as director of curriculum and instructional technology was also discussed during Tuesday's meeting.

Though Edgemont abandoned the position several years ago because of budget restraints, Taddiken said the board restructured its administration — cutting the number of assistant principals from three to two — so Curtin could step in and help staff adapt to the new Annual Professional Performance Reviews (APPR).

Edgemont's APPR plan still has to be sent to and approved by the New York State Education Department. At the next board meeting, Taddiken and Curtin will go over what the changes mean for staff and students at Edgemont, Taddiken said.

Because it's the first year of the new APPR, Taddiken said she doesn't want the numerical grades administered to teachers on their performance taken at face value by the community because it could take time for Edgemont to get used to the state's learning model.

"I think it's very important that we go through the components in more detail. We do not want people to misunderstand a numerical rating," she said. "We welcome the opportunity to explain the plan, how it's applicable to Edgemont and what we are doing in the first year of a very complicated system."
