Edgemont Superintendent to Retire Next Year

EDGEMONT, N.Y. – Edgemont School District Superintendent Nancy Taddiken will retire at the end of the 2012-13 school year, ending more than three decades of service in the district.

Taddiken made the emotional announcement Tuesday during the Edgemont Board of Education’s meeting.

“It is with a plethora of very mixed emotions; excitement, enthusiasm, trepidation, that I make public a decision that I have shared privately and definitively with members of the board in many discussions,” she said, reading from a prepared statement.

Taddiken was named superintendent of Edgemont schools in 1990, nine years after she had been appointed an assistant principal in the district. After spending more than three decades in the district, Taddiken said Tuesday it was difficult to imagine life after Edgemont but was confident the district would be strong moving forward.

“Knowing that we’re in great position moving Edgemont forward certainly made this difficult decision for me a little bit easier,” she said.

Board of Education President Gerry Stoughton praised Taddiken’s leadership and said it would be difficult to replace the superintendent.

“You have been Edgemont. You are Edgemont,” he said. “When I think Edgemont, I see Nancy Taddiken.”

In anticipation of the announcement, Stoughton said the board already has formed a sub-committee that will lead the search for Taddiken’s replacement. Until then, the superintendent pledged to continue working to better the district.

“My last year here will be one during which I will continue to do all that I can to make a difference in the lives of Edgemont students,” she said.
