Peters, who has served as the school district's superintendent since 2008, will leave the position on June 30. In a letter to the school community, Peters said that, while it was not an easy decision for her to end her time as superintendent, she believes "it is the right choice to make."
"I am leaving the district with an outstanding administrative team, an outstanding and effective teaching staff, sound academic plans for the future and a solid financial outlook, being one of the few districts in New York State that is debt free," Peters wrote.
Peters was formerly the superintendent of the Tonawanda School District in upstate New York before moving to Elmsford for the position in 2008. Her accomplishments include increasing Elmsford's graduation rate and a significant increase in student attendance, officials said.
Elmsford Board of Education President Matthew Evans said in a community letter that Peters' dedication has made Elmsford a better school district.
"Our school district has benefited greatly from her almost 40 years in education, where she has been committed to advancing educational opportunity and providing the best scenario and environment for all students to succeed," Evans wrote.
The Elmsford Board of Education is now looking to both a search firm and the school community for aid in filling the position. The search firm, which specializes in locating and selecting superintendents, will serve as an adviser to board members and assist with search logistics, according to Evans' letter.
A community forum will also be held in the coming weeks to assess the challenges, strengths and goals for the district. The search firm will then select candidates based upon the skills and attributes desired by the community for the next school leader, Evans added.
"The Board is committed to communicating with the public frequently throughout this process," he wrote. "A page on our district website will soon be created dedicated to the superintendent search where all pertinent information will be available."
