Elmsford Students Make Thanksgiving Meals For The Inaugural Day Of Service

ELMSFORD, N.Y. -- In the spirit of giving back to their community, close to 500 students from both Alexander Hamilton High School and student council representatives from the Alice E. Grady School assembled the makings of 33 Thanksgiving meals for local families and other pay-it-forward activities on Wednesday, Nov. 26.

The "First Day of Service: Hamilton Gives Back" was intended to make students more aware of those in need, from Elmsford and surrounding communities.

The students, who were chosen at random, also decorated the school for the holidays and wrote letters and cards for service men and women in Afghanistan. Inspirational bookmarks were created for patients at Maria Ferrari Children's Hospital, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and recovering veterans at New York Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals.

Festive placemats also were made for Elmsford's senior citizens and approximately 60 students read to children at the Dixson School, as well as helping them with holiday art projects.

Carmine's Italian Delicatessen, Dunkin' Donuts, the Fucci family and the Home Depot in Hawthorne collaborated with the district to make this First Day of Service a success.
