No students were onboard at the time of the fire, Tarricone said.

Traffic was a nightmare during the morning commute as Irvington firefighters worked to douse the flames, as police directed traffic.

The bus driver managed to escape without injuries, Tarricone added.

The bus was contracted to transport students to the John Cardinal O'Connor School located on the property of Immaculate Conception Church, Irvington Union Free Schools Superintendent Kristopher Harrison said.

Harrison noted that the bus was not transporting Irvington Union Free School District students.

"Our buses are operated by Royal Coach Lines Inc.," Harrison said in an email.

A cause of the fire has not been determined.
