GREENBURGH, N.Y. – After four years as superintendent of Greenburgh Central 7 school district, Ronald L. Smalls said that he will retire at the end of the year. He made the announcement on a letter posted at the district’s website.
Smalls didn’t explain his decision in the letter, but instead made a detailed review of his achievements, such as improvements in science teaching and interactive technology.
But when attendants of the Board of Education meeting yesterday asked him why he is retiring, he said that it was personal.
“Whether you like it or not, you have to respect it,” Smalls said to a parent.
When contacted by this paper, Smalls also replied that he had no comments on his retirement.
Despite of Smalls’s silence, some people couldn’t avoid thinking that a few upsets imposed on him by the community played a role in his decision. Shelly Packer, president of the district’s teacher union, pointed to the two times the district’s budget was defeated this year, first in May and then in a revote in June, and to the elimination of some administrative positions.
“He doesn’t need to put up with that,” she said. “He’s got the age now, so why not?”
Mary D. Spells, vice-president of the district’s Parents Teacher Association council, said that Smalls was a “very good PTA supporter.”
“We worked well with him,” she said.
In his letter, Smalls wrote that “while we have come a long way, many challenges still exist,” and, at the end, that it was a privilege to serve as superintendent.
