GREENBURGH, N.Y. Hanging in the Woodlands High School hallway are more than 30 flags, one for every nation represented by a student in the district.
On Friday, Greenburgh Central 7 celebrated that diversity during the districts first ever Global Gala. For over an hour students sang, danced and waved flags from around the world in front of a standing-room only crowd packed into the Woodlands auditorium.
We wanted to bring the community together through the arts, said Milena Din, president of the Parent Teacher Association and one of the organizers of the event. Everything the children prepared this evening is to show what diversity is in our district.
Parents watched as members of the Woodlands dance troupe slid across the stage to Michael Jacksons Man in the Mirror and listened as elementary students from Highview and Robert J. Bailey performed songs like Character and Dreams of Harmony.
They heard Eugene Boayke-Firempong, a Woodlands High School student, talk about how he moved to the United States years ago when his father landed a job with the United Nations. They listened as Boayke-Firempong talked about the fear and the apprehension he had coming to Woodlands but how those fears were quickly relieved when he was not only accepted, but embraced by his peers.
When you think about diversity, think about Greenburgh Central 7, Boayke-Firempong said.
Later, parents cheered as they watched a video of students who hailed from around the globe, from Haiti to Hungary, Spain to South Korea, loudly proclaim, we are Greenburgh.
Simply put, the only sad part about this occasion is that this is the first time we are doing this, said Superintendent Ronald Ross.
