Ross also announced the district's theme for the school year - "Our Children. Our Focus. Our Future" - as he led students, teachers and staff back to school Monday.

"The district's name has been Greenburgh Central since 1973, so this name is not new," Ross said about dropping the No. 7 state district designation seldom used by local schools. "What is new, is that we are operating with laser vision and we want the community to know that we are committed more than ever before to our children."

Last month, the district announced a districtwide re-registration process. All students had to be re-registered or they could not attend school.

The Greenburgh Central School District encompasses Early Childhood Program. Lee F. Jackson School, Highview Elementary, Richard J. Bailey School, Woodlands Middle School and Woodlands High School.
