GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- The Greenburgh Central School District will hold a parent information session to discuss the District’s newly adopted teaching and learning program, Universal Design for Learning, on the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Woodlands High School Little Theater.

The speaker and trainer, Nicole Tucker-Smith, will speak on “What Parents Need to Know About UDL.” Ms. Tucker-Smith, who has already trained Greenburgh’s teachers in a series of professional development sessions on UDL, will share her personal experiences about how UDL helped her own son and will help parents with strategies for understanding how to supplement UDL at home. The 7 pm session will be interactive and will include takeaway materials for parents with children at all grade levels.

Tucker-Smith consults with school districts, states and teacher preparation programs. She served as an elementary and middle school teacher in Alexandria, Va., and Baltimore, Md., and coordinated system-wide professional development for the Baltimore County Public Schools. She is an international presented on Universal Design for Learning.

“We hope that our parents will turn out for this valuable workshop,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tahira A. Dupree Chase. “UDL has been enthusiastically embraced by our teachers and admnistrators, and we are confident our parents will embrace it as well.”

Universal Design for Learning is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all students, based on scientific insights into how humans learn. It is tailored toward modern-day schools, where teachers must differentiate their instruction to meet the needs of highly diverse students.

According to its website, UDL minimizes barriers to learning in order to reach all students by opening up multiple and flexible ways that teachers and students can engage one another.
