At all three of the Hendrick Hudson School District’s elementary schools, students participated in a variety of activities designed to commemorate the attacks.

Students at Buchanan-Verplanck and Frank G. Lindsey Elementary Schools gathered in front of their respective buildings for ceremonies highlighting service and freedom and to mark Sept.11 as a day of remembrance.

At Buchanan-Verplanck, students and staff gathered for the school’s annual Day of Service and Remembrance ceremony. The ceremony honored the local and state police, fire department and EMT workers.

During the ceremony, students presented their honored guests with decorated boxes containing cookies and other treats, raised the flag and sang "God Bless America".

“Our community helpers do so much for us on a regular basis,” said Principal Joshua Cohen. “We want to ensure our students are a part of recognizing and appreciating those that support our community.”

Buchanan Police Chief Brian Tubbs said the event was humbling and rewarding.

"Events such as this give students an opportunity to meet the first responders in their community and see that we are real people who do what we do because we care about them and their families," Tubbs said.

At Frank G. Lindsey, the entire student body gathered around the school’s flagpole in front of the building for a ceremony that featured comments by Principal Donna Torrisi; a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner,”  a flag raising, and the singing of “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”

Members of the Montrose Fire Department were included in the ceremony, and they raised the flag to half-staff to commemorate Sept. 11 and the lives lost that day.

At Furnace Woods, one class learned about Sept. 11 through a children's book, read two poems and discussed what they knew about the attacks.

Furnace Woods kindergarten teacher Tammy Emanuelo shared a book with her class called, “September 12th We Knew Everything Would Be All Right,” which was written and illustrated by first graders, and had a conversation about being safe, choosing love and being kind to others.
