GREENBURGH, N.Y. With joyous dance and festivity, the Highview Elementary School celebrated the new, frosty season with their winter solstice assembly.
On Dec. 21, students from Highview's third grade Enrichment Program put on a show of song, dance and acting to highlight the December, January and February months.
"The kids have a blast," said Gary Mastrangelo, principal of Highview Elementary School. "The kids learn so much. They're using different modalities. They're not learning by reading in a book. They're learning by dancing or by playing an instrument or reading music or learning the words in a song. There is still a lot of learning going on, it's just in a whole different way."
While parents and teachers sat on chairs lining the gym walls, fellow second and third grade students filled the rest of the gymnasium, all facing an open circle in the center of the room where the performances took place. The audience watched intently as their classmates honored the winter season. The seated children clapped along to the catchy tunes and laughed at funny lines in the play.
"This is our version of winter," said Mastrangelo. "It's how winter enters and how summer exits."
The Enrichment Program students had been rehearsing for the past month. Instead of playing outdoors during recess, the group stayed indoors to learn their lines, synchronize their dance or perfect their performance.
The Highview students will also present a summer solstice assembly in June.
