HARTSDALE, N.Y. -- Students took turns approaching the microphone to participate in the Highview School's Mock Spelling Bee on Feb. 11.
They gathered in the school's gymnasium spelled words like "ardor," "charity," "lapse," "pixel," "tongue," "nectarine," "session" and "brilliant." Some of the words were difficult as they featured double letters, silent letters and homonyms. Nevertheless, the second-and third-grade students performed well under pressure and many stayed in the competition for several rounds.
Other students sat in the gymnasium, watching intently, showing support for their competing classmates and applauding after each word -- whether spelled correctly or not. Even the students on stage clapped for their peers who attempted each new word.
