IRVINGTON, N.Y. - Sunlight and a cloudless blue sky covered Irvington High School graduates Saturday morning as the group gathered one final time as classmates.
With the Hudson River in the background, dozens of friends and family sat on folding chairs in Matthiessen Park to watch the class of 2012 accept their diplomas and close the door on another chapter in their lives. Applause, cheers, laughter and the occasional tear rang out through the park as the seniors listened to their teachers and classmate's final words of advice.
The seniors remembered the times they shared together, good and bad, and wondered what the future may hold as each go their separate ways.
Many of the students in the highly acclaimed class of 157 graduates will head off to college, places like Indiana, MIT, Penn State or Brown. But they said, they will always remember the times they shared together in Irvington.
Weve all gotten so close over the years that is seems strange that we wont have the comforts of seeing everyones familiar faces every day in the hallway, said Class President Nicole Chernick.
While Chernick reflected on the past four years, Salutatorian Julia Canning spoke about the future. Dont take yourselves too seriously, she told the Class of 2012, and explore your interests and enjoy the path that life takes you.
If we follow our interests and our instincts we will likely end up where we are meant to be, she said. And if we find something that makes us happy, chances are we will be successful.
Superintendent Robert Roelle and Valedictorian Melissa Kuriloff told students to get involved and urged them to make a difference in the world, no matter how big or how small.
Your voice and your actions will make an impact, Kuriloff said. Get involved. Empower yourselves. Act. Lead. Click, share and join the rest of our generation as we shape the future of our world.
