WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Advice and optimism flowed throughout the Mercy College graduation ceremony Wednesday, including from commencement speaker Caryl Stern
“You must listen to all that you hear, not hear only what you listen to,” said Stern, who is the president and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF.
Inside a full house at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, students of the class of 2012 received their degrees in front of family and friends. The Springhurst Elementary School Harmonaires sang the National Anthem and Rabbi Benji Silverman from Chabad of the Rivertowns in Dobbs Ferry gave the invocation.
Valedictorian Matthew Jones gave his student address to the crowd as part of his honors and addressed the uncertain future many graduates will face.
“While this might intimidate some, it also presents an opportunity to share our talents with the world,” he said.
Awards given out included the President’s Medal for preeminent scholarship to Jones and the Mercy College Alumni Achievement Awards for Outstanding Leadership and Volunteerism to Daisy Mejia and Djinie Emmanuel.
Mercy College president Kimberly Cline congratulated the graduates, but also reminded them they all will remain a part of the school’s community forever.
“Today, we are going to celebrate you and we could not me more proud of what you’ve accomplished,” she said. “It is our hope that this is only the beginning of a long and growing connection with Mercy College.”
