On Thursday, Nov. 6 and Friday, Nov. 7, the Woodlands High School biology classes, taught by Samuel Washington, will team up with Lee F. Jackson School (K-1) and R.J. Bailey School (Grades 4-6) to teach the younger students about nutrition, fitness and healthy lifestyles.

The high school students will also visit New York Medical College in Valhalla to receive an overview of physiology careers, a lab facilities tour and a discussion about medical school. They will also practice blood pressure and stress tests with Dr. John Edwards.

Physiology Understanding Week began in the Greenburgh Schools in 2010 when Washington sought to augment the curriculum in his anatomy and physiology class. The week is an annual K-12 outreach program coordinated by the American Physiological Society.

Physiology is the study of how molecules, cells, tissues and organs function in health and disease. The week gives students an opportunity to meet and learn from research scientists, learn about the subject in their daily lives, and explore physiology as a possible career.

It also builds local partnerships between science teachers and scientists to provide new materials for teachers, and to give researchers a chance to reach out to the next generation of scientists.
