School Approves R.J. Bailey Roadway Makeover

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — School officials have given an architect the go-ahead to move forward with a half-million-dollar parking-lot makeover at Richard J. Bailey Elementary.

Greenburgh Central School District 7’s Board of Education voted unanimously last week to approve the plan, citing concerns of student safety in the small roadway that circles the school.

“It was purely a safety thing; that was our primary motivation,” said board President Terry Williams. “That is a narrow roadway and so many things happen there.”

Costing nearly $520,000, the plan includes the rerouting of a circular drive on the side of the school. The proposal also includes a widening of the drives that wrap around R.J. Bailey, restriping the parking lot and adding lights to the staff parking lot.

Crews would install a waist-high divider along the road behind the school, separating traffic and funneling students into a single path to cross the lot.

Earlier this month, KG&D Architects presented the board with three options, ranging in price and the scope of work.

But option one, which was $140,000 cheaper than the chosen plan, would only have been a temporary fix, Williams said. Option three, which would have raised costs to $680,000, would have provided a permanent solution but at the expense of the playground area in the back of the school.

“We felt two was best because it maximizes play space and also solves problems and issues we are currently seeing,” Williams said.

A $120,000 state grant will be put toward the work. Last week, the board approved the remaining $399,000 be taken from savings in this year’s budget, meaning no additional cost to taxpayers.

Work is expected to begin this summer and continue into the fall, taking six to eight weeks to complete.
