ELMSFORD, N.Y. Six students from the Alice E. Grady School were chosen to participate in the Westchester County School Music Association's 2012 All-County Elementary School chorus and band festival.
Two members of the school's band and four of the school's chorus were selected to perform at the March 10 and 11 shows at SUNY Purchase. The children smiled upon learning they could show off their talents at a county-wide performance.
"It is a tremendous accomplishment to be chosen for this festival," said Allison Shapiro, Grady's band director.
Timothy Brown, the Chorus director, selected sixth-graders Cheyenne Gaither, Lynassa Lugay and Cassie Praino and fifth-grader Christina Zengin-Karaian. Shapiro selected sixth-grade band members Corey Field on the trumpet and Rachel Jessamy on the saxophone.
The students were chosen by their respective teachers based on an audition. The students had to perform scales, a solo piece and sight-read an excerpt, Shapiro said.
"Out of all the students that were auditioned," said Brown, "these four young ladies were chosen for their pureness of pitch, clarity of sound, and the wideness of their vocal range. They will certainly be an asset to the chorus."
Once in late February and again in early March, all of the county-wide festival-selected students will meet for two intensive three-hour rehearsals, both occurring after school.
"Both Rachel and Corey are very dedicated students," Shapiro said. "They come to rehearsals, attend lessons and practice on a regular basis."
The chorus concert is March 10 at 4 p.m. while the band concert is March 11 at 11 a.m. Both take place at Purchase College's Performing Arts Center.
