Valhalla Track Team Excels At Relays

MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. -- Valhalla High School's track and field team had a great weekend at the 2016 New York Relays as many students earned personal best records.

On April 15 and 16, the athletes competed at the Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island and performed very well against several strong teams. On the boys side, sophomore Ethan Bartlett finished third in the High Jump with a personal best effort of six feet. Senior Kaio DaSilva finished seventh in the 110-meter Hurdles final with a time of 16.21 seconds. Kaio also tied his personal best of 5'8" in the High Jump. Senior Geovanni Orozco competed in the 2000-meter Steeplechase final, running a 6:46.06 to place seventh in the event. 

In the Pole Vaulting event, the Vikings had strong performances by seniors Elliot Pennella (11') and Brian Tellez (10'6). On the girls side, sophomore Samantha Morillo finished sixth in the discus with a distance of 104'4". She also finished sixth in Shot Put with 33'6.5", and seventh in the Javelin Throw with 82'. Senior Madison Brand turned in a time of 1:12.51 in the 400m-meter Hurdles. Olivia Bespolka jumped 15' in the Long Jump. 

Three Valhalla athletes turned in solid performances in a grueling two-day multi-event competition, testing the best of their running, jumping and throwing skills. Seniors Miguel Aranda and Junior Matias Aranda completed the Decathlon, scoring 3,838 and 4,030, respectively. Senior Eva Jean-Charles scored 2,504 in the Heptathlon.
