White Plains High Students Win Awards Tied To Coca-Cola, Regeneron, MLK Jr.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Four White Plains High School students were commended for recent awards at the Board of Education's meeting on Monday, Jan. 9, announced the White Plains School District.

Senior Shelley Zhu, a student in the school’s Science Research Program, was named a Semi-Finalist Scholar in the prestigious 2017 Regeneron Science Talent Search.

The honor was based upon her scientific paper, “Assessing Schwann Cell Biology in Vitro to Assess its Potential for Brain Hemorrhage Cell transplantation Therapy.”  Zhu conducted her research this past summer at Burke Medical Research Institute under the guidance of her mentors Dr. Rajiv R. Ratan and Dr. Marietta Zille.

Jordyn Fields was awarded the 2017 Dr. Martin Luther King Legacy Youth Award for Spirit of Love, by the African American Men of Westchester. She was honored at the organization's luncheon on Jan. 16.

Amala Davis has been named a Semi-Finalist in the 2016-17 Coca-Cola Scholars Program. This award is based on outstanding leadership, academic achievements and dedication to the community.

Michael Hunter was named 2016 White Plains Youth of the Year by the city’s Youth Bureau. He has volunteered at White Plains Hospital and White Plains Library, among other activities.
