GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- The Woodlands Pioneer Team participated in the Hudson Valley Special Olympics Spring Games and took home the gold medal in the 4x100 relay at West Point on Saturday, April 25.
Eight Greenburgh athletes competed in the track and field events. They took part in shot put, running long jump, the 100-meter run and turbo jav, which is a modified version of javelin. In addition, while it was their first time competing in the unified 100-meter relay, the students won first place. The Special Olympics offers "a variety of Olympic-style sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community," reads the organization's website.
