RYE, N.Y. – Charles Barry missed all of the fun last year as his Greenburgh Swim Team teammates won the Westchester County Swimming and Diving Championships.
The 17-year-old Iona Prep senior-to-be had also missed the 2010 County Championships. Both years Barry was preparing for the Junior Nationals. Barry did not want to miss his final County Championships and the opportunity to win the team title.
Barry made a statement with his winning performance in the boy’s 17-and-under 200-yard individual medley, setting a new meet record in a time of 1:59.48 seconds. Barry shattered the former standard of 2:01.60 established in 2009 by Alex Giannino. Ironically, Barry said he was in the heat when Giannino set the record.
“It’s really fun and I am happy to be swimming here again,” said Barry, a Hartsdale resident.
Barry was in a heat with his Badger Swim Club teammates, Declan Kennon, who finished second, so the Iona Prep senior knew he would have to be at his best.
“I was working into it in the first 100,” Barry said. “I knew I would really have to push it in the breaststroke because I knew that Declan is a really good IMer. Once I pulled ahead in the breaststroke, that’s when I felt good. My breaststroke felt better than usual.
“It feels great to win and is a good way to start off the meet. I feel great to be a part of it and I am hoping to score some more points in my individual events to help the team win.”
