Dobbs Ferry H.S. Flying High After State Title

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – After claiming its fourth state title, the Dobbs Ferry High School football team has raised the energy level of students to a new high.

“It’s pretty exciting,” said Dobbs Ferry sophomore Sean Grogg.  “Whenever people see the football players in the hall everyone’s stopping and patting them on the back.”

The high school started the week off by playing “We Are the Champions” over the loud speaker Monday morning and some feel that students, especially the players, are entitled to a brief honeymoon period.

“They’re not really learning today, they’re floating in the clouds,” said Dobbs Ferry sophomore Daniel Lilling.

The Eagles dominated in the title game this weekend and dropped Southwestern 39-0 for the New York State Class C championship at the Syracuse Carrier Dome.

“It was nice, we had a lot of the alumni from past championship teams at the game,” said Dobbs Ferry High School Principal John Falino.  “It’s historic too. It’s a big accomplishment.”

It’s historic because it marks the fourth state title for Dobbs Ferry and its first since 2006, which gives the Eagles the most titles of any Section 1 football team.

Falino said at least 400 to 500 people made the trip to support the Eagles at the game and the school is flying high now.

“Everyone’s excited, there’s a really good, positive vibe around the school,” he said.

Many of the football players will have a short offseason due to the deep playoff run, though.

“Basically that whole football team has to go to basketball practice now,” Falino said.  “There really is no rest for the weary.”

Until then though, Dobbs Ferry will continue to celebrate its victory and accomplishment of bringing the state championship back home. The village is planning on having a parade for the football team on Saturday before the lighting of the tree.  Village officials said the timing of the parade is not confirmed yet though as they are hoping to plan around any scheduling conflicts.
