Elmsford Golfer Plays For State At National Event

ELMSFORD, N.Y. – Two Westchester golfers will represent New York State in the United States Golf Association’s 10th Men’s State Team Championships.

Mike Miller, reigning Metropolitan Golf Association Player of the Year, who plays for Knollwood Country Club in Elmsford, and former Southern Methodist University golfer Max Buckley of Rye will both play for the Empire State Team.

The tournament will be held at the Galloway National Golf Club in Galloway, N.J., from Sept. 19-21.

MGA director of rules and competitions Brian Mahoney, currently in his 12th year with the organization, selected the two players. Mahoney is the captain of the Empire State Team.

“We are fortunate to have so many great amateurs to choose from in our state, and I think this year’s team will be one of the strongest at the championship,” Mahoney said.

Mahoney also chose Joe Saladino of Huntington, N.Y. for the team.

The Men’s State Team Championships started in 1995 and features a team from every state comprising three amateur players who are not in college. The tournament consists of three 18-hole rounds of stroke play. Each player’s two lowest scores are counted towards the team’s overall score, and the team with the lowest score at the end of the 54 holes is crowned champion.

New York has never won the event but Mahoney hopes the three young men can end that drought.

“In addition to being outstanding players, Joe, Mike and Max also display the highest standards of sportsmanship every time they compete,” Mahoney said. “I am looking forward to the championship and I know the players are, too.”

Miller currently sits at No. 49 in the World Golf Amateur Rankings and was the 2011 Met Amateur Champion. He also leads the MGA Player of the Year standings and won the Westchester Amateur championship earlier this summer.

Buckley went to his second straight U.S. Amateur championship in August. He was the runner-up at the Westchester Open and tied for second at the Ike Championship.
