Fall Ball Flourishes at Westchester Community

VALHALLA, N.Y. -- Dobbs Ferry’s Eddie Fanning joined a growing group of more than 40 baseball players at Westchester Community College baseball field Monday for the start of the fall baseball season practice.

“I played three sports at Dobbs Ferry, so I haven’t played a lot of baseball in the fall,” said Fanning, who also played baseball and football at Dobbs Ferry. “I hope to come out and improve my skills and get my education started here.”

Players from New York City, Westchester County and Rockland County were out on the soggy turf for Vikings head coach Billy McClure, who said the fall season was a good prep for spring baseball and players benefitted from staying sharp through the fall months.

“Fall ball helps me prepare for the spring,” WCC Head Coach Billy McClure said. “It’s important that I see them outside in the fall because during the spring season the first time we are outside playing is mid-march in Florida when the season starts. Prior to leaving for Florida, we are practicing in the gym where it is difficult to see a players full potential."

McClure’s Vikings were 27-17 and Mid-Hudson Conference champs last spring. WCC opens its fall season at home on Sept 10. with a doubleheader against Globe and will continue through Oct. 22.

“We are coming off one of our best seasons in recent past,” McClure said. “We are looking to continue the success from last year and with 50 to 60 players trying out, the coaching staff and I have a lot of difficult decisions to make."
