RYE, N.Y. -- Jazmine Smith went into the 10-and-under girls 50-yard freestyle Tuesday seeded first. The 10-year-old, swimming for Greenburgh Swim Team, understood she was going to be challenged because of her seed, but Smith was prepared. Smith started fast and finished even faster, winning the event at the 86th annual Westchester County Swimming Championships at Playland Pool.
Smiths win was just one of many fine performances Greenburgh Swim Team coach Jackie Cordero. Kymani Senior finished second in the 12-and-under boys 50-yard butterfly. The 10-and-under boys medley relay team of Kelvin Smith, Thomas Sasso, Jared Copeland and Mekhi Green were also second and the 10-and-under girls medley relay team finished third. Smith won the 50 fly in a time of 28.30 seconds after going 28.42 during her heat.
I was a little nervous, but I went in focused and wanted to see what I could do, said Smith, a sixth-grader-to-be at the Horace Mann School. Going into the finish made me feel really happy when I won. Senior was poised to place this year. He was motivated because he did not place in the top eight last year. The 12-year-old eighth-grader-to-be at Woodlands Middle School finished with a personal-best time of 27.12 seconds.
I felt I did really well because I dropped my time by a full second and all I wanted to do was prove that I could make it into the top eight, and I did, Senior said.
Cordero was very proud of her team, especially her boys relay quartet. The foursome came into the championships with a qualifying time of 2:54 seconds. They shattered that mark, clocking in at 2:40.05. This was the first time in a county meet for some of the boys, Cordero said. Each of them took off from the start and they finished strong to the wall.
