Irvington Girls Race Past Kennedy in Semifinal Win

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The Irvington girls basketball team fought off a strong first-half effort by Kennedy Catholic Tuesday and went on to a 56-35 victory in the Section 1 Class B semifinals at the Westchester County Center.

Top-seeded Irvington (19-1), the two-time defending Section 1 and New York State Class B champion will meet No. 2 seed Blind Brook, which defeated Dobbs Ferry 69-66 in overtime of the other semifinal game, in Sunday’s championship final at 7 p.m. at the county center.

Alexis Martins led all Irvington scorers with 16 points, teammate Brittni Lai scored 13 and Marley Giddins added 12 points for the Bulldogs. Giddins scored nine of her points in the first quarter. Alyssa DiCampli scored nine points in the first half and keyed the fast break.

Kennedy used a tight defense to limit Irvington’s high-scoring offense early and trailed 12-8 after one quarter and 29-12 at halftime as the Bulldogs defense stiffened as well. Irvington extended its lead to 40-35 after three quarters and would not allow Kennedy back into the game.

Sara Dowd led Kennedy with 12 points.
