Irvington Girls Rout Jamestown in Slam Dunk

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Alexis Martins had 20 points and 20 rebounds and the Irvington defense made an adjustment early in the first quarter en route to a 67-36 victory over Jamestown in the opening round of the girls’ bracket Slam Dunk Tournament at the Westchester County Center.

“We had to do a better job of helping on defense and stopping their drives to the basket,” said Bulldogs guard/forward Marley Giddins, who had 17 points and nine rebounds “We made sure we stepped in and pressured their guard (Rosa Valasquez) and played strong against the big girls inside.”

Irvington advanced to Thursday’s 4 p.m. championship game against Mount Vernon, the winner over Kingston in the other girls’ opening-round game.

While the Irvington defense was helping turn a 13-9 lead into a 21-13 lead after one quarter, Brittni Lai was scoring 14 first half points that led to the Bulldogs’ 39-22 halftime lead. The second half was more of the same. Lai scored seven points in an early burst to lead the Bulldogs to a quick 11-0 lead.

Martins scored 12 in the first half and had 10 rebounds, doubling that work on the boards in the second half. Alyssa DiCampli had five points and handed out five assists for the Bulldogs.
