Irvington Girls Win Third Straight State Title

TROY, N.Y. – The Irvington girls’ basketball team left no doubt about its claim on the Class B state championship, defeating two previously unbeaten teams back to back Friday and Saturday to claim its third straight New York State Public Schools title in Saturday’s  convincing 69-42 victory over upstate South Jefferson at Hudson Valley Community College.

The Bulldogs (24-1) will represent New York public schools in next weekend’s state Federation tournament that includes teams from parochial, private and New York City public schools.

The Bulldogs outscored South Jefferson 16-7 in the second quarter to take a 29-19 halftime lead after the teams played even (13-12 Irvington) in the first quarter. Irvington extended its lead to 46-20 after three quarters and ran away in the fourth quarter to take the title.

Irvington defeated two unbeaten teams to win their third title, dispatching Saranac (22-1) in Friday semifinals and South Jefferson (24-1) in a 30-hour span over two days in Troy.

Brittni Lao scored a team-high 25 points and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Marley Giddins scored 18 points and Lexi Martins had 14 points and 16 rebounds for Irvington. Giddins, a senior, and Martins, a junior, have been a part of all three state championship teams and Lai has been with the team for two seasons.
