ELMSFORD, N.Y. Knollwood Country Club's Mike Miller, the Metropolitan Golf Association's Player of the Year in 2011, is one of five golfers tied for the lead at the prestigious 2012 Ike Championship presented by Canon Business Solutions being played in the Atlantic Golf Club in Bridgehampton, N.Y.
Miller, a 20-year-old who lives in Brewster, joined four other players who shot 1-over-par 73s on the opening day of play Tuesday, after Monday's scheduled opening round was canceled because of thunderstorms.
Miller, the 32nd-ranked amateur in the world, was paired with Joe Saladino of the Huntington (N.Y.) Country Club, last year's Ike Championship runner-up, who also posted a 73 for a share of the lead.
Im thrilled, and Im right in it, Miller said. And thats what kind of day it was, to post a good number. Its not a sprint, its a marathon, so Im excited. Playing with Joe, hes a great player and he played great today. He shouldve shot four or five under but he didnt make anything.
Forty-one players made the cut after battling difficult scoring conditions with winds blowing consistently between 20 and 25 miles per hour. The tournament will be completed Wednesday with 36 holes.
The other players with a share of the lead going into Wednesday are Sam Bernstein of the Century Country Club in Purchase; Charlie Edler of the Rumson Country Club in Rumson, N.J.; and Ryan McCormick of the Suburban Golf Club in Union, N.J.
Another group of five players finished Tuesday's round with 74s, one off the leaders.
